What Is the Ask Price?
The ask price (also called the "offer price") is the lowest price a seller is willing to accept for an asset at any given moment. When you place a market buy order, you pay the current ask price.
How the Ask Price Works
In any order book, sellers place limit sell orders at various price levels. The ask price is the lowest of these sell orders — the best available price for a buyer. The difference between the ask price and the bid price (highest buy order) is the bid-ask spread.
For example, if BTC's order book shows the lowest sell order at $65,010 and the highest buy order at $65,005, the ask price is $65,010 and the spread is $5.
Why It Matters for Traders
The ask price directly impacts execution cost. In liquid markets, the spread is tight and the ask is close to the bid. In illiquid markets, the spread widens, meaning buyers pay a premium. Understanding ask dynamics helps traders optimize entry timing and avoid slippage on large orders.
