What Is a Breakout?
A breakout occurs when price moves above a resistance level or below a support level with conviction, typically accompanied by above-average volume. Breakouts signal the start of a new trend or the continuation of an existing one.
How Breakouts Work
Price often consolidates in a range bounded by support and resistance. As buying or selling pressure builds, price eventually "breaks out" of this range. Genuine breakouts are confirmed by increased volume and sustained follow-through. False breakouts occur when price briefly pierces a level but quickly reverses.
Why It Matters for Traders
Breakout trading is one of the most popular strategies in crypto due to the market's tendency for explosive moves after consolidation. The key is distinguishing genuine breakouts from fakeouts. Volume confirmation, retests of the broken level, and timeframe alignment all increase breakout trade reliability.
