What Is Change of Character?
Change of Character (CHoCH) is a Smart Money Concepts (SMC) term for the first break of the prevailing market structure, signaling a potential trend reversal. In an uptrend (series of higher highs and higher lows), CHoCH occurs when price breaks below a previous swing low for the first time. In a downtrend, CHoCH occurs when price breaks above a previous swing high for the first time.
How Change of Character Works
CHoCH differs from Break of Structure (BOS): BOS confirms the existing trend (higher high in uptrend, lower low in downtrend), while CHoCH challenges it. A single CHoCH does not guarantee a reversal but shifts the probability. Traders look for: CHoCH on a significant swing point (not minor fluctuations), strong momentum on the CHoCH move, and follow-through with a BOS in the new direction to confirm the reversal.
Why It Matters for Traders
CHoCH provides the earliest warning of a trend change. Rather than waiting for lagging indicators (moving average crossovers, which are slow), CHoCH identifies the precise moment when the trend structure breaks. The strategy: spot CHoCH on a higher timeframe (4H or daily), then use lower timeframe (15m, 1H) for precise entry on the pullback to the CHoCH zone. Combined with order blocks and fair value gaps in the new trend direction, CHoCH setups offer some of the highest risk-reward entries available.
