What Is Kumo Cloud?
The Kumo (cloud) is the shaded area between Senkou Span A and Senkou Span B in the Ichimoku Kinko Hyo indicator system. When projected 26 periods ahead, the cloud forms a dynamic zone that acts as future support/resistance. Price above the cloud is in a bullish zone; below is bearish; inside the cloud is in a transitional zone.
How Kumo Cloud Works
Cloud thickness indicates strength: a thick cloud is harder for price to break through (strong support/resistance); a thin cloud or a "twist" (where Span A crosses Span B) represents an area of weakness where trend changes are more likely. The color of the cloud (green when Span A > Span B, red when Span B > Span A) indicates the prevailing sentiment.
Why It Matters for Traders
The Kumo cloud is uniquely powerful because it provides forward-looking levels — you can see potential support/resistance zones 26 periods into the future. This forward projection is unmatched by any other indicator. When the future cloud is thick and green, the path of least resistance is up. When it's thin or twisting, a trend change is more probable.
