What Is Extreme Greed?
Extreme greed is the market condition when the Crypto Fear and Greed Index reads above 75, indicating widespread euphoria, excessive risk-taking, and a collective belief that prices can only go up. This environment is characterized by: record-high social media hype, extreme funding rates (longs paying high premiums), new retail entrants flooding in via mobile apps, and parabolic price action.
How Extreme Greed Works
Extreme greed is a lagging indicator — it confirms euphoria that's already reflected in prices. However, it serves as a powerful contrarian warning. Historically, periods of sustained extreme greed (Index above 80 for multiple weeks) have preceded every major crypto correction. The challenge is that greed can persist for weeks or even months before the correction materializes.
Why It Matters for Traders
During extreme greed, the appropriate response is to reduce exposure, take profits on open positions, tighten trailing stops, and build cash for the inevitable correction. This doesn't mean selling everything (the market can remain greedy longer than you expect), but it means shifting from offense to defense. The profits you protect during the greed phase become the capital you deploy during the fear phase.
