What Is Mainnet?
Mainnet is the live, production blockchain network where real transactions with actual monetary value take place. It's the "real thing" as opposed to testnets (used for development) or devnets (used for experimentation). When a project announces a "mainnet launch," it means their blockchain or protocol is going live and users can start using it with real assets.
How Mainnet Works
Mainnet launches are significant milestones for crypto projects. Before mainnet, a project typically runs on a testnet where tokens have no value. The transition to mainnet involves: deploying finalized smart contracts, migrating any testnet state, enabling real asset deposits, and opening the network to public participation. Some projects launch mainnet in stages (limited beta, then full public access).
Why It Matters for Traders
Mainnet launches are major catalysts for token prices because they transform a project from a concept (speculation) to a functioning product (utility). The "buy the rumor, sell the news" effect is common — prices often rise in anticipation and sell off briefly after launch. However, projects that demonstrate strong mainnet traction (growing TVL, active addresses, revenue) typically see sustained price appreciation post-launch.
