What Is Narrative?
A narrative is the dominant story or theme that drives attention and capital in crypto markets. Narratives include: "store of value" (Bitcoin as digital gold), "DeFi summer" (decentralized finance replacing banks), "L2 season" (scaling solutions gaining traction), "RWA tokenization" (bringing real assets on-chain), and "AI + crypto" (artificial intelligence integration). Narratives give investors a framework for deciding where to allocate capital.
How Narrative Works
Narratives create self-reinforcing cycles: a compelling story attracts attention → attention drives investment → investment drives price increases → price increases validate the story → more attention. This cycle can persist for months as the narrative gathers momentum. But narratives also unwind: when reality fails to match the story, or when a newer narrative captures attention, capital rotates quickly.
Why It Matters for Traders
Trading narratives is one of the most profitable approaches in crypto because narratives drive 70%+ of altcoin price action. The skill is identifying narratives early (before they're consensus), sizing exposure appropriately (narratives can fail quickly), and recognizing when a narrative is exhausted (when "everyone knows" and positioning is crowded). Being early to a narrative and disciplined about exits captures the lion's share of narrative-driven gains.
