What Is Order Flow Analysis?
Order flow analysis studies the actual orders hitting the market in real-time — who is buying, who is selling, at what prices, and with what urgency. While price charts show the result of order flow, order flow analysis reveals the cause. It's the modern equivalent of tape reading: watching the raw transaction stream to detect institutional activity.
How Order Flow Analysis Works
Key order flow concepts include: delta (the net difference between buying and selling volume at each price), cumulative delta (the running total of delta over time), absorption (large orders absorbing selling without price declining), and initiative activity (aggressive buying/selling that moves price through levels). These metrics reveal the intent behind price movements.
Why It Matters for Traders
Order flow analysis provides the highest-resolution view of market activity available. A price level that holds on heavy selling with strong bid absorption is far more significant than one that simply hasn't been tested yet. In crypto, order flow analysis on CEX perpetuals provides real-time insight into leveraged positioning — the most active and influential participant class in the market.
