What Is Seed Phrase?
A seed phrase (or recovery phrase, mnemonic phrase) is a series of 12 or 24 words that serves as the master backup for a cryptocurrency wallet. These words, selected from a standardized list of 2,048 words (BIP-39), encode the master private key from which all individual private keys and addresses in the wallet are derived.
How Seed Phrase Works
The seed phrase is the single most important piece of information in crypto self-custody. Anyone who knows your seed phrase has complete control over all assets in that wallet — they can recreate the wallet on any device and transfer everything. Losing the seed phrase means permanently losing access to the funds if the wallet device is also lost. There is no recovery mechanism or customer support.
Why It Matters for Traders
Seed phrase security is paramount: never store it digitally (no photos, no cloud, no email), never share it with anyone, never enter it on a website (phishing is the #1 attack vector), and store physical copies in multiple secure locations (fireproof safe, bank vault). The vast majority of crypto losses are not from blockchain hacks but from seed phrase compromise or loss.
