What Is Hash Rate?
Hash rate is the total computational power committed to mining on a proof-of-work blockchain, measured in hashes per second. For Bitcoin, it represents the combined processing power of all miners worldwide competing to solve blocks. Higher hash rate means more security and more competition among miners.
How Hash Rate Works
Bitcoin's hash rate is measured in exahashes per second (EH/s) — currently over 600 EH/s, meaning miners collectively perform over 600 quintillion hash calculations per second. The network automatically adjusts mining difficulty every 2,016 blocks (~2 weeks) to maintain a 10-minute average block time regardless of hash rate changes.
Why It Matters for Traders
Hash rate is a network health and miner confidence metric. Rising hash rate signals miners are investing in infrastructure (bullish long-term commitment). Sudden hash rate drops indicate miner capitulation — machines being shut off due to unprofitability — which historically precedes price bottoms. Hash rate recovery after drops signals the worst is over.
